    A clear demonstration of how quickly the early dreadnoughts were overtaken by advances in naval technology. Service life of 10 years, going from the flagship of the fleet to basically a second rater by 1916, under armored and under gunned to the point of being surplus to requirements in 1919.

    Good discussion. Truly. I do, however, feel a few salient points were missed. In general, the US prior to World War Two, was much more convinced than the British that aircraft carriers were going to be just as important, or more than, as battleships. And the carriers the US had were very fast for the time. Many of the United States older battleships could not keep up with the carriers. And so a major design consideration for the iowas was speed to keep up with carriers, NOT speed to overtake cruisers/battlecruisers. This is an important distinction because the iowas were still, largely, treaty limited battleships via the escalator clause. In other words. They had to make sacrifices in order to keep the weight limit within treaty, mostly so as not to alienate the British since the Japanese had already pulled out. And yet they still needed the battleships to be faster than carriers. Hence, the limited armor. As such, the Iowas were treaty BATTLESHIPS , in which the designers made the hard choice to sacrifice armor for speed so as to make the battleship able to function alongside fast carriers. The British, conversely, going into Ww2 still very much considered the battleship to be their primary surface combatant. Please, if you’re a Brit reading this don’t rage reply. The Brit’s Absolutely had aircraft carriers and made good use of them, but I’m taking about doctrinal emphasis, on which they continued to place greater weight on battleships. This is why the Brit’s during Ww2 really struggled to field good NAVAL war planes to operate off carriers which is why over half of their fleet air arm ultimately used American Naval warplanes: wildcats, corsairs etc, because naval planes were something of the red haired step children of British Navy funding prewar. When the Brit’s had money to spend in the navy, they spent the lions share on battleships/battleship upgrades. Evidence of the emphasis in British doctrine on battleships. In summation, you really need to look at how the Iowas were slotted into how the Americans thought they would fight (with Aircraft carriers being a major part) versus the British, who still placed the bulk of their thinking on battleships and battlecruisers. There were good reasons for each nation to think this way: pacific vs. Atlantic/Mediterranean sizes for example. But the fact remains that Drach, who I’m I admire, definitely has a bit of British thinking doctrinal bias, which used a lot of battleship centric ideas in WW2, rather than examining how the US was tailoring it’s fleet, as best it could, to operate with carriers as a major, if not THE major, naval surface combatant.

    There was a period when Battleships were becoming obsolete about as fast as combat aircraft in the 1930's, when they moved from wood & Fabric biplanes to all metal monoplanes while engine horsepower at least doubled and top speed shot up (to the sky).

    It is ironic that it was budget controls that kept the 13.5-inch gun off the ship instead of the usual problem of not wanting to wait for the guns to be finished. Probably was a good move anyway because not using up the supply of 13.5-inch guns on Neptune and the Collosuses meant a full half-squadron of much better Orions could be launched very quickly just a couple of seasons later.

    Couple of side notes on the Emden. One of her 4.1" guns is now a memorial on the corner of Park and College Streets in Sydney and an Emden-damaged piece of Sydney's ranging gear is at the front of the Royal Australian Naval College in Jervis Bay NSW (my naval alma mater). This damage, with three sailors killed, was a result of one of the very few hits on Sydney by Emden before Sydney withdrew out of range and picked the other ship to pieces. On a more personal note, my late grandmother seems to have been courted by one of the Emden's officers while he was a POW in Australia. Her father was the visiting dentist at the prison where he was being kept. l have a photo of him with a very nice annotation and a beautiful carved box he made and presented to her before he was repatriated to Germany in 1919.

    • @umad42
      @umad42 21 час назад

      Eh. This was the early dreadnought era, ships were basically obsolete 3 years after hitting the water. If you look at modern capital ships, like aircraft carriers and the like, the life spans of these ships are much, much longer now. Like we're decommissioning the Nimitz class, but that's less a case of an "obsolete" design and more a case of budget constraints. Nowadays we get like 50 years per capital ship
